The world’s most significant developments are a result of curiosity. The NASA organization is the leading organization in space exploration, making it one of the most curious organizations in the world today. NASA, through space shuttles and highly trained astronauts, leads in the world’s most expeditious space travels. While not everyone goes to space, many astronauts out there do it and share their experiences online. If you have the knack for space exploration, here is a list of nine astronauts you can follow on Instagram.

  1. Scott Kelly

Scott’s Instagram handle is @stationcdrkelly. Scott Kelly has about a million Instagram followers. Scott Kelly spends a lot of time on space and is generous to share how he lives on space. Due to his lengthy stays on Space, Scott is the one Astronaut to follow in case you want a real touch of what happens in space. If interested in space, you will find his page quite inspirational. Scott has accumulated time in space of up to 520 days. This time involved up to four expeditions.

  1. Buzz Aldrin

Buzz Aldrin is the second person in the world to reach the moon. Buzz Aldrin Instagram username is @drbuzzaldrin. Buzz is common for encouraging people to visit planet Mars. You will be surprised that despite retirement, Buzz Aldrin is an active figure on social media and has an Instagram following of 226,000 followers. Buzz Aldrin is also a modern-day inspiration to space explorers at 90 years as he still shares his first experiences on Space alongside legendary Neil Armstrong. You will also find it interesting as the second man on space that he only stayed for about 12 days on space with an extravehicular activity of about 7 hours.

1. Kjell Lindgren

Lindgren spearheaded the launch of the International Space Station in 2015. In 2009, Lindgren became a member of NASA Astronaut Group 20. His first trip was Expedition 44. At 47, Lindgren has not failed in sharing his experiences on and off space, having started in the United States Air Force, joining the US Airforce Parachuting team, after a science degree, a resident in emergency medicine, and later as a resident in aerospace medicine. Kjell has an accumulated 141 days in a single expedition 44/45 to space. His Instagram username is @astro_kjell and has a following of over 357,000 followers.

2. Tim Peake

Tim Instagram handle is @astro_timpeake. He is the first British astronaut on the ISS. His first spaceflight was on Soyuz rocket in 2015, where he spent an accumulated 185 days; this was over three trips. Some of his first activities were the repair of a power supply and driving a rover on planet mars. On his visits to Space, Tim shared these moments, and it is all inspirational to see him do it.

3. Christina Koch

Christina’s first expedition to space was in March 2019 and just returned to space on Feb 2020. Koch’s Instagram handle is astro_christina. She first joined NASA in 2013, and even as a kid wanted, she wanted to be an astronaut. In December 2019, Christina broke the record for the first woman to have been on space for a long time, having spent up to 328 days. These days are from an accumulated six space missions. One of her common trips is the recent first space girl walk. Before her first travel, Christina had once shared on Instagram training steps taken in getting ready to space.

4. Mark Kelly

Mark Kelly is an identical twin of Astronaut Scott Kelly. Marks Instagram handle is @captmarkkelly. Mark started as a US Naval Aviator and later flew combat missions, one of the common ones being the Gulf War. Later in 1996, Mark Kelly flew the space shuttle STS-108, which was his first expedition. Unlike his brother Scott who spent 340 days on space, Mark has spent much of his Astronaut time as part of the “control group,” studying the effect a year on space can have on a body.

5. Leland Melvin

Leland’s Instagram handle is @lelandmelvin. Leland is a motivational story having been the first player drafted on NFL to go to space. Leland, moreover, shares how head injury at the NFL made him deaf and almost left him out of his dream to visit space. Leland Melvin is a true inspiration that a disability should not bar anyone from their dreams. Leland has been to two space missions accumulating about 23 days. On Instagram, Leland shares both personal and professional information about himself. Moreover, he is common for sharing pictures of his dogs on Instagram.

6. Rick Mastracchio

His Instagram handle is @astronaut-rick.  Rick is now 59 and known for sharing throwbacks of his adventures in space. Rick was the pilot of three space missions to space and accumulated up to 228 days of visits on space. He also accumulated up to 53 hours in vehicular time, which involved nine spacewalks. Rick Mastracchio takes multiple interviews talking about space exploration, among other issues.

7. Terry Virts

Terry is a veteran astronaut. His Instagram handle is @astro_terry and has about 265,000 followers. Terry Virts, in his time, served as Commander of the International Space Station. He also once served as Colonel of the US Airforce. Terry can be remembered for a Vulcan Salute commemorating Leonard Nimoy. On his Instagram page, you can find an interesting summary of his times in space as an astronaut.  Terry visited the space four times. He accumulated about 213 days in these visits and had an Extravehicular Activity (EVA) time of up to 19 hours.

There are multiple astronauts in the world today. Their shared experiences are exciting and inspirational. While not everyone gets to visit space, having an idea of how it looks like and what astronauts go through is a good thing. Besides, there are multiple scientific things to discover from space.
