Moment SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket crashes and explodes during landing1 min read

SpaceX launched its Falcon 9 v1.1 rocket on Sunday, successfully sending NASA’s Jason-3 ocean-measuring satellite into orbit, but failed a return landing on a drone platform in the Pacific Ocean.

According to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, one of the Falcon 9’s legs failed to lock as it touched down, causing the rocket to topple in a “hard landing”.

The landing-fail reportedly may have been due to an ice buildup during the rocket’s liftoff.
