5 Awesome Apps For Astronauts!4 min read

Some of us want to be Astronauts, some of us wanted to be Astronauts! But that doesn’t mean we can’t be one now!

There are a plethora of great space themed apps on the app store and below i’ve picked five great apps that can bring the thrill, excitement and danger of being an astronaut straight into the palm of your hand! I have concentrated mainly on iPhone, but most are available on both iTunes and Google Play!

1. The NASA App

Well you can’t be an astronaut without having the NASA App!

The NASA App showcases a huge collection of the latest NASA content, including images, videos on-demand, NASA Television, mission information, news & feature stories, latest tweets, ISS sighting opportunities, satellite tracking, Third Rock Radio and much more. The best thing is its absolutely free! A must for any existing or wannabe Astronaut!

Its available on both the App store and Google Play.

2. Star Chart

You can’t be an Astronaut without knowing your way around the neighborhood! There are a few great astronomy apps out there, including SkySafari, Star Walk and SkyView® but my favorite remains Star Chart for its simplicity, ease of use and information for the amateur astronomer.

Star Chart uses state of the art GPS technology, an accurate 3D simulation of the visible universe, and a great deal of technical wizardry, Star Chart calculates – in real time – the current location of every star, planet and moon visible from Earth and shows you precisely where they are; even in broad daylight!

3. FTL: Faster Than Light

A great strategy game that will train you to for future space missions after mankind develops the FTL drive!

FTL: Faster Than Light is a top-down, space ship simulator created by indie developer Subset Games. In the game, you control the crew of a single spacecraft, holding critical information to be delivered to an allied fleet eight sectors away, while being pursued by a large rebel fleet. You must guide the spacecraft over eight sectors, each with planetary systems and events procedurally generated in a rogue-like fashion, while facing against rebel and other hostile forces, recruiting new crew, and outfitting and upgrading their ship. Combat takes place in pausable real time, and if the ship is destroyed or all of its crew lost, the game ends, requiring you to restart with a new ship.

Oh, and the soundtrack is awesome too!

4. Lifeline

Lifeline is probably the most unusual, but addictive app in this list. Drawing heavily on the premise of “The Martian”, Lifeline is a story that plays out in real time after you are contacted by Taylor, an astronaut stranded in space.

As Taylor works to stay alive, notifications deliver new messages throughout your day. Keep up as they come in, or catch up later when you’re free. You can even respond to Taylor directly from your Apple Watch or your iPhone lock screen, without launching into the app.

Lifeline is a deep, immersive story of survival and perseverance, with many possible outcomes.

5. Lastronaut

Lastronaut is a pixel-packed, adrenaline-fueled dash for your life as you run, jump, dodge and fire your way through the machine army, equipped with an arsenal of human and robotic weapons to cause mayhem with. At dawn, as the rest of humanity lifts off in the distance, it’s your mission to reach the last rocket ship leaving Earth.  So maybe this scenario maybe a long way off in reality, but Hey! it doesn’t hurt to be prepared!

The year is 2015: Mankind has created it’s first sentient machine: a humanoid robot. If we only knew what would happen next, we probably could have saved ourselves. Now, we’re abandoning the only planet we’ve ever known.

Galaxy On Fire (1 & 2)

We can’t have a space list without this game… its HUGE! While maybe not the best app to prepare you for life as an astronaut, it is a must for anyone who loves space based games!

Galaxy on Fire takes place in a fictional galaxy ruled by four major factions (the pioneering Terrans, the conservative Nivelians, the defiant Midorians and the belligerent Vossk) and centers around Keith T. Maxwell, a former Wing Commander of the Terran Space Fleet, who now earns his credits as a gun-for-hire and ends up saving the universe from demise and destruction more than once. Fans and media alike have often complimented the immense freedom of action, which Galaxy on Fire grants the player due to its well-balanced mix of story, mission, and sandbox gameplay. At any point throughout the game, you can digress from the main story and go on an adventure of your own. Addictive!
